Basically, Steiner is ordered to take the two survivors of his platoon and another squad to blow up a railroad tunnel. They fail miserably and then retreat with the rest of the Russians. Then Steiner takes a breather in Paris, just as the Allies invade Normandy. (Makes no sense -- German forces pulled out of Russia in early 1943, and suddenly it's June of 1944???) While preparing to defend from U.S. attacks Steiner becomes involved in the plot to kill Hitler.
