Also called Runstedt-battle (after the German commander Gerd von Runstedt), the fighting took place from December 16th in 1944 to January 15th in 1945 at the end of World War II in the eastern and northeastern part of Belgium and in some parts of Luxembourg.
The Battle of the Bulge was one of the last battles of the German forces and was the attempt to gain back the power at the western front, but they failed. Altogether about one million soldiers took part in the battle. This is why this battle was the largest on land with American participation during World War II.
The American term "Battle of the Bulg" comes from the english word "bulg" and applies to the bulge of the frontline in the western direction. All in all about 8607 American and 17236 German soldiers died during the fight.
