women of the rubble

"Truemmer", German for debris. A term coined during the Second World War for those women who cleared away the rubble after the bombing raids. The word soon became a label for an entire generation, and resonates the women`s newly acquired independency. Since the men were fighting at the front or returned years after the war from captivity, women were forced to take on jobs that were previously considered "men`s jobs", such as working construction.
