A Martyr is a person who is being persecuted and - often after being tortured - ultimately executed for his religious or - by today - other beliefs.
The word can be traced back to the 2nd Century AD and has since been connected to the christian movement and religious persecution. By today, all people who sacrifice themselves for their beliefs are referred to as martyrs.
