atomic bomb

A form of atomic weapon, also called nuclear weapon. Atomic weapons win their explosive power during nuclear fission or nuclear fusion. Atomic bombs belong to the category of Abc weapons or weapons of mass destruction. In principle uranium bombs, plutonium bombs and hydrogen bombs can be differenciated.
The first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16th in 1945 at the White Sands Missile Range near Alamogordo in the US state New Mexiko. It was called the "Trinity-Test".
On August 6th in 1945 the first atomic bomb (called "Little Boy") was dropped on the Japanese town Hiroshima by the American bomber "Enola Gay". About 90.000 people were killed immediately, 50.000 more died during the next few years because of radiation sickness. On August 9th in 1945 the American bomber "Bockscar" dropped the second atomic bomb (called "Fat Man") on Nagasaki. This time about 36.000 people were killed immediately and 40.000 died because of the high radiation in the following years.
