documentary
Since film was invented it is used to portrait places, people and things, which were formerly unknown to people and which they would have never seen themselves. From the beginning documentaries wanted to show intesting events, f.i. the presentation of Lumiéres "Czar et Czarine entrant dans l'eglise de l'Assumtion" (1896) at the first world exhibition. Later exotic people and animals were presented - following the spirit of colonialism ot the leading film countries. Film producers sponsored very expensive expeditions in order to be able to produce films like Nanook of the North (USA 1922), which was extremely successfull. With this film the boundaries of the strictly documentaristic film can allready be seen: The events are told out of the lyric perspective of Nanook. Another form of subjectivying the perspective in film was brought about with the use of documentaries for propaganda. See also propaganda film
