plot synopsis:
1939: private Asch and gunner Vierbein belong to the same platoon and suffer the same drill. But while Asch is clever and shrewed Vierbein is said to be the loser of the unit who through his many mistakes arouses the attention of his superiors. Especailly the much feared drill sergeant Platzek uses any occasion to make Vierbein`s life dour. More and more often Vierbein has to take over extra service as punishment for his mistakes until he finally collapses. Asch starts to take care of his comrade and begins to oppose the systematic drill and deliberate harassment.
