Between 1995 and 2004 some German towns showed an exposition on the 'Wehrmacht', documenting the terrible war of destruction led in the East between 1941 and 1944. The image of the unsoiled Wehrmacht was destroyed. for example by photos of soldiers shooting civilians. The NPD, an extrem right-wing party, protested and even some politicians expressed their dislike of this exposition.
The director Michael Verhoeven followed the traces of the Wehrmacht into Ukraine and White Russia and talked to historians and eyewitnesses about the terrible occurences during the war.
