The film is very psychological and tries to mediate. The topic is revenge in times of war and the missing honour of an official, who's dishonouring is his end. Famous militiamen, just like Valentin González "El Campesino", play an important role. He visits the front and is welcomed very friendly. But there is also an inner enmity within the rows of the republics. The film tries to show the nuances and tries to find a platform for mutual acceptance. This becomes clear in a scene, in which "El Campesino" and a demolition expert meet. He has to blow up a punt and "El Campesino" says to Him: "You are an anarchist, but I know you very well and I know how competent you are."
