plot synopsis:
Siberian boy Ivan and a German ace major Johann, both excellent snipers, engage in a life-and-death confrontation. On leave Johann discovers that his wife has been cheating on him. Conversely, Ivan meets and falls in love with a good girl. However, in the final scene the German major kills the girl but spares Ivan: while the latter is carrying his beloved’s body out. Johann keeps his sights on Ivan but never pulls the trigger.

Ozerov borrowed the Stalingrad scenes from his own movies, shot a few additional scenes and imbedded them in this war epic. In 2001 French director Annaud will have much more success with almost the same story in "Enemy at the Gates".
