plot synopsis:
Two students in Heidelberg at the time of the Napoleonic Wars fall in love with the same girl. When the fighting begins, the unloved one joins the French army, the other, happy husband of the girl fights on the German side. When he is captured by the French the one defected to the French frees him and is put straight before a firing squad for it. Standing at the grave of his friend he learns from his wigfe that his friend was also in love with her. The film ends howing Blücher and Körner.

At the time of its appearence sheets of music were put on the seats so that the audience was able to sing along to the numerous songs of the film, but especially to join in at the end in "Ich hatt einen Kameraden", an old soldier song.

Already in 1923 the Film-Obersprüfstelle (the censor's office) stated the exagerated sentimentality of the film. The scenes' primary purpose were to give the audience an occasion to perform traditional songs rather than provide any kind of cinematographic entertainment, it complained.
