plot synopsis:
The film “USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage” (2016) is based on the true story of the US Navy during the Second World War. It tells the dramatic story of the USS Indianapolis, which was on a secret mission from the island of Tinian to the Philippines in the summer of 1945. After the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the voyage, the Indianapolis sank within minutes. Around 900 men survived the accident, but very few of them knew how to survive in the vast open sea. Without an immediate rescue operation, they had to survive for days with hardly any food or water, while being threatened by sharks and the scorching sun.
The movie primarily follows Captain Charles McVay (played by Nicolas Cage), the captain of the ship, and his desperate struggle to save the lives of his crew, while also struggling with the shame of later being blamed for the incident. The story highlights the themes of camaraderie, the will to survive and the consequences of choices made in war.
