"Jarhead" is based on the memoir of Anthony Swofford, called "Swoff", who tells about his experiences during the Gulf War in 1991.
At the age of 20 Swoof comes as a sniper of the Marines to the Middle East. After leaving a training camp he sets out under Sergeant Sykes with a heavy rucksack into the desert. Here they suffer from the heat and the invisible Iraqi soldiers. They can only bear their time there due to their friendship, black humour and sarcasm.
The soldiers are in an unknown country, in a war they do not understand and which is moreover fought in the air and they just wait for something to happen. In the meantime they hang around, ply football with gas masks or bet on scorpion fights.
