A deep friendship connects the son of a british farmer Albert and his horse Joey. With the outbreak of World War One the two friends are forcefully parted. Joey is sold to the army and brought to the front in France. On his way through war, the young horse touches the lives of all those he meets, British and German soldiers as well as a french farmer and his granddaughter. Nevertheless, the longing for his friend Albert remains. Then, although he is too young to entlist, Albert gets to France to save Joey and to bring him back to England.
