Astuciously and cunningly Bohemian private Schwejk, a dog-catcher in civilian life, survives all the dangerous situations he runs into because of his clumsyness. During his first contact with the enemy he meets a milquetoast just like himself. They start debateing the uselessness of war and eventually decide to change their uniforms. As Schwejk returns to his unit in a Russian uniform he is mistaken for an enemy spy and faces execution. Again Schwejk is lucky and peace is proclaimed. This way he manages to be on time to meet a friend "at six o`clock after the war" and can plausibly state: "I won`t forget the war for weeks!"
