The film is a documentary about the search, the finding and the loss of the wall paintings of the jewish writer and painter Bruno Schulz (1892-1942). In 1941/42 he made these wall paintings showing fairy tales for the children of the SS leader Felix Landau in his Villa in the Ukrainian city Drohobycz. With this art work he wanted to save his life. These paintings show the last self-portrait of the artist, because on November 19th 1942 he was shot by the SS. The search for the pictures started after the end of World War II, but nothing was found. Much later, on February 9th 2001 the wall paintings were found by the team of director Benjamin Geißler. But the refound work was lost again soon. In Mai 2001 parts of the pictures were stolen by employees of the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem, who brought them to Israel. This is why a world wide dicussion started. The different parties (Jews, Ukrainians, Polish and filmmakers) fought about the claim of ownership. The film became a documentary kriminal movie, that makes people think about documentary work itself.
