plot synopsis:
The film: “The Other Europeans in: The Broken Sound”, tells the story of a musical journey of discovery based on the traces of a unique musical culture between Jewish Klezmer and Roma musicians in Bessarabia before World War I. These families of musicians lived together, intermarried and created a communal musical culture that was destroyed by World War II, forming a tradition that seemed lost ever since.
Seven decades later, 14 internationally renowned musicians from different countries travel in search of the lost sounds of this culture, their journey taking them through various countries such as Texas, Moldova, Israel, Germany, Poland, Austria, Hungary and France. What originally begins as musical research develops into a profound and often painful examination of their own identity and the question of the place of Jews and Roma within and outside Europe. Not only is the musical heritage explored, but also the position of the musicians in society, both in the past and in the present
