When his father is involved in a skirmish with British soldiers and escapes to join the commando of General de Wet, young Japie Greyling is left in charge of the farm and his family. The British arrive and demand to know the whereabouts of the commando, which the boy refuses to reveal even when face to face with a firing squad.
