Pierre Brossard helped a German SS unit during World War II executing seven Jews, as he was a young soldier of the Vichy regime. Since the end of the war he has been living on the run. After 48 years he found a hiding place in a Catholic convent in the Provence, that sympathised with the Vichy regime. But still he is tracked and only narrowly escapes a killer, who might have been instructed by the Israelis. Brossard requests for help at Commissaire Vionnet, his old Vichy contact man.
Meanwhile judge Annemarie Livi tries to call Brossard to account, but encounters many difficulties, as there are still many sympathizers of the Vichy regime in the police authorities. She gets support of Colonel Roux, who helps Livi searching for the war criminal. To complicate the hiding of the ex-Nazi for the convents she publishes a photo of Brossard in the newspapers.
For some days Brossard can live at his ex wife's place, but Livi and Roux find him out.
Now Brossard wants to escape from France with the help of his former colleague Pochon, but has to reckognize that his allies are also his enemies.
