The First World War had brought many difficulties and pain into the life of the Ukrainian pwople. The soldiers had faced horrors from their enemies and their own officers. Timosh returns home after he survived a train wreck. He arrives the day when there is a celebration due to Ukrainian freedom. He begins to challenge the local authorities and wants the Soviet system to be adopted. In the munition plant he had worked for there starts an uprising.
