plot synopsis:
In a Baviarian village the young countrywoman Maria falls in love with the French war prisoner Jean-Pierre, who is working at the farm of Maria's father-in-law. Her husband Hans was post as missing in Russia and only his mother believes in his returning. Even Maria's little son Karl has taken Jean-Pierre as a father figure and the relationship is mainly accepted.
The idyllic situation is disturbed when hans returns. The couple is alienated and it comes to a catastrophe.
