In 1914, short before the outbreak of World War I the brothers Andrej and Nikolaj have the dream of their own football field ans the profession of a football player. The Brits had brought this new game to the czarist Russia. Andrej is a student and Nicolaj works at the chemist's. They live with their ill father in their uncle's house. Whenever they find the time they go out on the streets or fields to play football, sometimes to win money. But gangster destroy the plan of their own football field, when they kill the owner of the field and one of their friends and players. The atmosphere between the brothers gets tense when they both fall in love with Wita. Then Russia intervenes in the war and Nikolaj has to go to the army. When he returns four years later he finds Andrej still living in his uncle's house with Wita and their child. But as in the old times the brothers got out taking a football to play.
