After his escape in 1938, the drawer Michael Bott (who was searched by the Gestapo because of burlesques against the NS-regime)comes back from swiss exil in his destroyed home town Munich in 1947.
A spate of distrust, animosty and contempt from his former love Anette Rodenwald and other friends smashes against him.
The reason therefor is the disappearance of adornment which was given to Bott by a jewish Lady namend Nelly Dreyfuß. Everyone knew about this demontsration of confidence against Micheal. After his departure, Nelly had killed herself to escape from the Gestapo.
Only with the help of Katharina, the girlfriend of the ex-husband of Nelly then, Nelly´s death and the lost of the jewels can be cleared up.

The film is the frist feature film produced in the american zone of occupation. It contains an accounting with the history and the optimistic will of building up, the realistic characterisation of the winter of hunger in 1947 and a pathetic belief in a future without weapons and war.
