plot synopsis:
A Ordinary Man” tells the story of a former war criminal hiding undetected in an undisclosed Balkan country. The general (Ben Kingsley) is wanted internationally for ethnic cleansing and war crimes, but his home country claims not to know his whereabouts, despite considerable international pressure to extradite him. A loyal circle of supporters protect him and allow him to lead a relatively normal life in a town where his face is well known, despite the threat of danger. One day he is assigned a new maid, Tanja (Hera Hilmar). At first he treats her coldly and dismissively, but over time he begins to reveal his deep loneliness to her. The initial mistreatment gradually develops into a strange, unpleasant friendship between the two.Eventually it comes to light that Tanja is not just a domestic servant - she has been assigned as an agent to protect him. When the general reluctantly asks her to drive him to his home village, she complies with his request and takes him to the cemetery. There she is met by his driver, who kills her without hesitation before taking the general back to the city. In the final scene, the general sits alone at his kitchen table - a pistol and bullets spread out in front of him - as he awaits his imminent arrest, and the film ends with this depressing image, prompting viewers to reflect urgently on guilt, power and loneliness.
