plot synopsis:
Dolomites mountain guide Florian Dimai and Count Arthur Franchini share the love for the mountains and are longtime friends. When the First World War breaks out they find themselves on opposite sides of the front. An Italian platoon under the command of Franchini works its way to the Austrian trenches with a tunnel in order to blow up the mountain top. The Austrians, encircled on the top, can hear the permanent hammering and knocking. Helplessly they wait for the moment of explosion...
After the war Dimai and Franchini meet again. After everything that has happened, what does thier friendhip still mean to them?

For Trenker this 1931 movie, filmed under extreme conditions (54 days of filming in high mountains with snow, ice and 22°C minus ) was worth the effort, it was his international break-through. In Hollywood he even produced an US-version entitled "The Doomed Battalion".
