Elizabeth Lane is one the country`s most famous columnist. For a large women`s magazine she writes about the country-life on her farm in Conneticut, her experineces as a young mother and publishes her finest recipes. In reality she is an unmarried New Yorker who does not know how to boil an egg - let alone to put a baby diaper on. Her famous recipes are written by restaurant owner Felix and the descriptions of idyllic country-life are inspired by visits to John Sloan`s farm, an admirer of her.
Of course her publisher Yardley has not the slightest notion about this. To increase circulation he talkes Elizabeth into inviting the highly decorated war-hero Jefferson Jones on her farm for christmas. For him it is the perfect publicity gag: "the" all-American housekeeper and mother prepares an unforgetable Christmas for "the" American war-hero. Knowing her career is over if the truth comes out, Elizabeth agrees. Of course, it all ends well with Elizabeth falling in love with her unwanted guest.
