The film Kajaki - The True Story (2014) tells the story of a real incident that took place around the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan in September 2006. A unit of British soldiers led by Corporal Mark Wright (David Elliot) is sent to Helmand Province to patrol the area. Their mission is to drive the Taliban away from a roadblock at the Kajaki Dam and to monitor the area. Along the way, they pass a dry riverbed where one of the soldiers steps on a landmine - a mine left behind by Russian forces in 1979/80 as part of the occupation of Afghanistan - and the situation quickly escalates as it becomes apparent that the squad is surrounded by more mines and that every step they take risks serious injury or death. In this extreme situation, the soldiers are faced with the challenge of sticking together to care for the injured and find a way to rescue them, and the film impressively conveys the sacrifice, courage and camaraderie of the soldiers fighting for their survival in this hopeless situation. The realistic portrayal of the incident provides a deep insight into the horrors of war and the physical and psychological stress to which the soldiers are exposed.
