The film is set in Paris during the winter just after its liberation from the Nazis. Jean Diego, a former member of the French underground, meets up with his friend Raymond again. A tramp, pretending that he is the Destiny, predicts Jean will meet a beautiful girl he will fall in love with. The same evening, Jean meets Malou in a pub and carries on a furtive romance with her. He soon discovers that her brother Guy was the one that gave Raymond away to the Gestapo. In addition to this, the wealthy husband of Malou gets, egged by two collaborators Jean is in trouble with, in jealousy of Jean.
