Erwin Rommel was the most popular general during the Third Reich in Germany and as very important for the Nazi-Propaganda. His hallmark were fulgurous attacks and an impulse to push.
For a long time it was assumed, that his war in Africa had nothing to do with the plans of destruction of the SS, but newly discovered documents prove, that during Rommels' campaign Jews from Northafrica and Palestine got into the eye of the SS. The question occurs how much Rommel knew about the Holocaust and the plans of the NS-leaders. He as supposed to be an unpolitical military, who was made to some kind of heroe by Goebbels.
In November 1941 he almost got voctim of his own myths. It is the first time in this documentary that British soldiers tell about the assassination on Rommel. The plan was to send a submarine of a task force from the Lybian coast on 18 November 1941 to arrest or kill Rommel. The British premier Churchill wanted to achiecve some propaganda to weaken the morality of the German Africa corps, but the assassination failed.
Only in the battle at El Alamein in October 1942 one could strike the Germans a blow.

This film shows how Rommel became a subject of propaganda and how he led his war, not only in Northafrica, but as well against his many enviers in the army. He owed his rise to his tactic of bold pushs, which also had many losses, and the support of Hitler, who called him his best general. But there were others who contributed to his success like some commanders or the radio units, which had cracked the codes of the Brits very early and thus made the sudden attacks possible.

Until today Rommel is perceived as a caring commander, popular among the soldiers, but his methods of attacking claimed many losses.
