Tirol in the year 1915: Although the Gruber familly harbours a certain aversion for the “Walschen” which are the Italians of South Tirol the daughter of the wealthy hotelier family gets married with the engineer Angelo Calzolari because the father aims among other things at financial benefits. At the wedding Anderl Gruber the brother of the bride falls in love with Francesca, Angelo’s sister. But then Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary und the Calzolari family wants to depart the country. Anderl achieves that Francesca stays at the Hotel and she hides there until he also becomes a soldier. Anderl and Angelo are now fighting for counterparties and for both it quickly becomes clear that the war is not an adventure but contains a horrible gravity.
