Peter Hämmerle is one of them, who came back traumatised from Afghanistan. He was leading a convoy on the way to Kabul airport, when a suicide attacker bombed himself. Till today he cannot forget what had happened.
More than 9.000 German soldiers are on deployment worldwide to bring or support peace, but have to experience the horrors of war. Some find their way back into normal life, but more and more suffer from psychical injuries.
In the military hospital in Hamburg specialists take care of the traumatised soldiers. Rolf Winter is here the fourth time. He took the war home. The psychatrist Karl-Heinz Biesold explains that with such a trauma you react as if you were still in danger.
Many soldiers suffer from such a trauma many years after their return and they are left alone with their problems as the German Bundeswehr does not feel responsible for such cases.
Three years ago some soldiers founded an asssociation called "Skarabäus" to talk openly about their experiences, as many soldiers perceive this as a debility.
