plot synopsis:
New Zealand,1943: Sgt. Stryker is a tough, experienced - and drinking - marine drill instructor who is feared and hated by his men for his training methods. Pfc. Conway, the pacifist son of a famous general who died at Guadalcanal, first resist Strykers hardening process but is ultimately converted into a fighting marine. When the men finally have to fight the Japanese on the island of Iwo Jima, they realize how much they owe Stryker. In the same moment as the American troops storm the him of Mount Suribachi Stryker is shot by a sniper.

For most Americans the name Iwo Jima immediately evoke the the photograph of the four soldiers raising the flagg on Mount Suribachi - one of the most famous photos of World War II and an American national icon. Only two days after the picture could first be seen in the U.S., Senators called for a national monument modeled on the photo. Sculptor Felix DeWeldon build the statue that equates photographer Joe Rosenthal`s picture in everyy detail. The four statues are each 32 feet high.
The three surviving Flag Raisers appeared in the movie and re-enact the scene that made them famous alongside John Wayne.
