Denmark was no willing helper of the Nazis, and refused to automatically turn over its Jews to the death camps. Petersen, the film's hero, at first vacillates in his commitment to protect his Jewish neighbors. Then he happily joins his fellow Danes in smuggling 7000 Jews to the safety of Sweden.
