plot synopsis:
It is the story of Lidia Modzel, sisiter of Sigismond and financé of Adoplhe Hardeff, who live in the neighbouring country. The two men are conscripted to the army when war between their two countries breaks out and they are officially enemies. Both men get killed in the war. When Lieutenent Maxim delivers the message to Lidia, she collapses. That she has lost brother and financé in the same battle lets her almost lose her mind. But Maxim tries to help her and eventually falls in love with her. Only in a convent she finds a little consolation.
