The action espionage film ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ by director Guy Ritchie is based on the non-fiction book by Damien Lewis and is a highly fictionalised version of Operation Postmaster during the Second World War. Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson and Henry Golding can be seen in the leading roles. Freddie Fox plays Ian Fleming, the famous author and co-founder of the British Special Forces.
The plot of the film is set in 1939, when Great Britain is militarily defeated by Germany on the European mainland. To counter the military actions of Nazi Germany, Winston Churchill set up a secret Special Forces unit in 1941, tasked with utilising unconventional methods of warfare behind enemy lines. Brigadier Gubbins and Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming devised the secret Operation Postmaster, the aim of which was to destroy the supply system of the German U-boats, which were inflicting considerable losses on the British in the North Atlantic.
Major Gus March-Phillips, an eccentric officer who has been released from prison early, is chosen to lead the mission. He puts together his own team, consisting of weapons specialist Anders Lassen, navigation expert Henry Hayes, explosives expert Freddy ‘The Frogman’ Alvarez and master planner Geoffrey Appleyard. This group of misfits and specialists are sent on a dangerous mission, the outcome of which could have a decisive impact on the British endeavours in the war.
