In 1940 the two Jewish children David and Else flee from Germany via Sofia to Palestine. They are on their way with an uncle, who dies of a heart attack in the train and now they stand alone and helpless at the station of Sofia. But a trio of artists, the magician Dimi, the singer Zarah and their assistant Sami attend to the children. They make their way through the Balkan on their 'journey to Jerusalem'. Hotels are miserable, their shows paid badly and the Bulgarian police is hunting them and even asks the young SS-officer Lothar Straub to help them. But he falls in love with beautiful Zarah.
The three artists embosomed David and Else and succeed in guarding them till the end.
