plot synopsis:
Children’s doctor Helga Reinbeck works in 1943 in Yugoslavia for the Red Cross. One day her life suddenly changes: she is kidnapped by partisans and must give them medical assistance. First she does it under pressure – but with time she realises that also those men need and highly appreciate her help. She even tries to pass on medicaments from the enemy camp, risking her own life.

The film received six international awards. 1954 Käutner was awarded the Bundesfilmpreis, Germany's film prize, as Best Director. For her convincing portrait of a doctor Maria Schell received the prize for Best Actress in Cannes 1954.
