This documentary accompanies the ex-Vietnamese woman Mai Thi Hiep on the journey from her new homecountry America to the country of her childhood, Vietnam. Her destiny started in the last days of the Vietnam War in 1975. In those days the city Danang at the river Han was full of fear. There the American troops had built up the largest air force base in South East Asia in the 60s. Since that time Danang is full of bars, restaurants and brothels. The entertainment of the troops makes the natives earn money. When the Vietcongs free Danang, they punish the collaborators. A lot of them die because of torture and cruelty. Mai Thi Kim, the mother of Mai Thi Hiep is such a collaborator. After her husband has left her alone with three children, to join the Vietcongs, she finds work and safety in the Navy. She becomes pragnant from the affair with an American, who leaves her because of the baby. Then she is afraid of the rumour that the Vietcongs would kill all half-caste children. That is why she sends her daughter to America. In the USA the girl is adopted by a woman, who makes her deny her country of origin. Mai Thi Hiep becomes a real american citizen and is called Heidi Bub. But 22 years after she left her home country, she wants to visit her natural mother. But the differences between the two women and their countries are too big. The documentary accompanies Heidi on her journey through the past. With the help of material from the archives it becomes possible to retold.
