plot synopsis:
On the last day of the First World War the American soldier Joe Bonham is badly wounded by a landmine. He loses his arms and legs, and his ability to see, hear, speak, and smell. The doctors believe he is merely a human casing. But Joe still has thoughts and his tactual sensation is still intact. A nurse discovers that joe is still able to communicate. She "speaks" with him by forming letters on his bare chest, he answers by nodding his head using the Morse Code. Despite Joe's unbearable situation the chief medical officer refuses to let Joe be seen or visited by his family nor does he allow a mercy killing.
