In German-occupied France in 1940, a French village is captured by a regiment of German soldiers. Lucile Angellier and her mother-in-law, who are both waiting for news of Lucile's husband, who is fighting in the French army, must take in Wehrmacht Lieutenant Bruno von Falk. When Lucile later learns that her husband Gaston is a prisoner of war and had an affair before the war that also resulted in a child, she gives herself over to affection for the sensitive and piano-playing Bruno, who gives her one of his own musical scores.
After the farmer Benoit shoots a German soldier who was trying to arrest him, Benoit goes on the run and is hidden by Lucile at her home. Lucile wants to smuggle Benoit to Paris where the Resistance is gathering, for which she gets papers from Bruno, but their love affair has made Bruno's superiors suspicious and there is an altercation at a checkpoint in which Benoit is injured. Bruno also joins in, but helps Lucile escape and stays behind. Lucile later learns that Bruno died in the war.
