The Vietnam War was the first TV-war. The suffering of the civilian population, the dying soldiers, the devastation of a country were dilered into the living room of the world. The images had a traumatising effect, and anyone who used them pursued different aims: to influence public opinion in one or the other way.
In 1967, H&S - Heynowski and Scheumann, documentary filmmakers from the GDR - were the first TV team who shot in a North Vietnamese POW camp. They managed to get interviews of ten American pilots.
This documentary presents the original footage of the pilots which has recently been discovered comparing it to the scenes which were used in H&S's film. In addition, some of the then POWs are interviewed.
The film also allows an insight view into the daily working process of proganda film makers and describes today's attitude of former enemies.
