The film describes the French defence of the jungle fortress Dien Bien Puh against the Vietnamese superior strength. The film deals as one of the first with the ongoing conflict in Vietnam which was in 1955 still known as French IndoChina.
The film is made in the heroic US war film stile, because in the 56-day battle of Dien Ben Phu several French volunteers are arising heroes. Precisley, these by parachute arriving soldiers are the ones who make a courageous stand against the Communist forces. Their loyalty to comrades on the ground leads French paratroopers to jump into a death trap.
The script was written by the novelist Irving Wallace.
