plot synopsis:
Lt. Col. Moore and his family move to Fort Benning GA., because he is assigned to command a newly formed infantry unit. His battalion is equipped with helicopters that will fly the men directly to their area of operation. For weeks Moore trains his men, mostly young unexperienced officers with the help of his battle-hardened sergeant major Plumley. As he could not complete the training Moore feels uneasy when orders arrive that his battalion is going to be send to Vietnam. His uneasyness increases as he learns on the night before they are shipped that his unit is renamed after Custer`s legendary 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry. Over in Vietnam his foreboding becomes reality. The 1/7 is assigned to an action at Landing Zone X-Ray in the Drang Valley. Almost immediately they find themselves surrounded by 2.000 Vietnames soldiers while trying to defend a space merely the size of a football field for three nights.
