plot synopsis:
Danny Weems, a hypochondriac elevator boy, is drafted for military service during World War II, which makes him desperate. To keep an eye on Danny, his best friend Joe also enrolls into the army. While Joes girlfriend Virginia is in love with Danny, he loves Mary who instead is in love with Joe. When the newly recruited boys are about to be shipped to the pacific ocean, Mary and Virginia enroll as nurses. To keep Mary with him, Danny smuggles her onboard but she is discovered and Danny is send as a prisoner to the Brig. Later, japanese soldiers discover and interrogate him, but he is able to outwit them, making them believe he is their commander, thus making them give up. This turns Danny into a hero.
