Bardhi is a poor peasant boy, whose fathers died during the Italian occupation. In order to help Bardhi`s mother, his uncle Selim, a docker, places Bardi as a servant at the family of the merchant Galip Shkembi. Bardhi is mercilessly exploited and severely beaten for the slightest mistake. His dream is to one day own and learn how to play violin, like Nardi, Galip`s son who gets regular private lessons by Eqerem, the musicteacher. The local Party cell orders Eqerem to also take care of the children`s political education. As he is aregular guest in Galip`s house he realizes Bardhi`s talent and tries to cultivate it through regular lessons. This way Bardhi not only learns about music but under the influence of his teacher becomes aware of the conditions of the fascist occupation and the exploitation of the poor by the rich.
