plot synopsis:
Worker Scholz leads a happy life with his wife and two sons until the war breaks out and he has to leave his family to go to the front. The longer the war lasts the harder life becomes - at the front and at home. Scholz` wife struggles hard to support her two sons, then the older one is killed in a fire. At the front Scholz reads about this incident and soon after loses his sight in a mine explosion. As he returns home his wife is about to die. Scholz and his youngest remain alone. During the upheavals after the war Scholz passes a sign that reads: Stop here! Passers-by are shot!, and is killed. So his youngest boy who was just queuing at a soup kitchen to get something to eat for his father is left alone.
