At the time of the British withdrawal from India, Victoria Jones finds herself caught between two worlds because she is half British and half Indian. After an attempted rape she is psychologically traumatized and leaves her callous Anglo-Indian lover. First she turns to a Sikh and then to the British Colonel Savage, who tries to prevent the communist Darvay from starting a bloody revolt. More and more Victoria is pulled into the events of this turbulent time.
