The five sons of an Iowa railroad worker and his wife decide to join the navy after the events of Pearl Habor. Since they have always done things together they request to serve on board the same ship.
During the naval battle of the Solomon islands their cruiser, the USS Juneau, is hit in the powder magazines killing many of the crew including the five brothers. The grief-striken parents are invited to witness the launching of a new destroyer named in honor of their sons USS The Sullivans.
