The attractive Lt. Paul Wendland is positioned in North-Afrika as a fighter pilot. He becomes commanded to Berlin as a reporter for one day. There he watches the performance of the danish singer Hanna Holberg and falls in love at first sight. When Hannah goes to some friends after the show, Paul follows her and accost her in the subway. He escorts her home and because of an air raid warning he has to come with her in the air raid shelter of Hanna´s house. Hanna falls in love also, but after just one night Paul has to get back to the front. After some other meetings in which the realationship gets closer, both want to marry. But Paul feels that he is needed at the front, although he has got no instruction to come back. So Hanna is angry and they get into a conflict. The war with the UdSSR starts and Paul and is fellow Etzdorf are sent to the front. When Etzdorf dies, Paul writes a farewell letter to Hanna to get over the danger of his sorties. First when Paul gets wounded and is sent to a military hospital, they see each other again. Hannah still wants to marry him.
