A small village on the Dalmatian coast in Croatia during WW2 changed hands quite frequently in this period. First Mussolini's squadristi are in power, followed by the even more brutal Croatian Ustashe and finally the Partisan liberators take over.
In the midst of all the turmoil young Partisan commander Davorin falls in love with Veronika, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, who collaborated with the Italians in order to save his money and house even if that menat he had to betrayed his people. For someone like Davorin who holds an important position in the revolutionary movement this proves to be beginning of the end. Influenced by his newfound love he starts to slip up and make mistakes that his superiors do not appreciate in the least.
